Weekend Brunch.
There is nothing like it. Knowing you can relax and plan your day .... ahhhh. I love it.
I thought I would share one of the recipes from the 'fun' part of my cooking adventures. The great, the amazing: Egg in a Hole.
Okay, so it's nothing fancy and it's nothing new - but it's a favorite fun thing to make for the entire family.
We start out pretty simply:
- Bread (any kind will work, but the thicker the better in this case)
- Eggs
- Butter
Seriously: that's it. All things you probably have on hand at any given point in time.
So let's jump right on in the hole ...
Take your bread and lay out. You can use a biscuit cutter, cookie cutter, or glass like I have done here. *Tip: for a fun anniversary, birthday or Valentine theme: use a heart shaped cutter.
Push the tool down and make a circle cut. You can do one of two things here, eat the hole or toss away. I hate to waste perfectly good bread - so I will make a small peanut butter sandwich for my toddler for later.
Now are are ready.
Grab your skillet - get it hot and add in your butter. I use about 2 tablespoons - be generous, you don't want your bread to burn.
Once your butter starts to melt, put in your bread.
I leave a little butter in the center because that's where I'm about to break my egg ...
Crack the egg inside and let it start to cook. You want the egg to set on the bottom before flipping.
Here you can see the white of the egg has begun to set. Allow your bread to get a little crisp and then it's time to flip!!!
Take your spatula and do it just like a pancake:
Allow to cook on this side so the egg sets and the other side of the bread gets a little crispy. I always do one final flip before serving ... it's habit; don't ask me why.
And there you have it. Egg in a hole.
Serve up to your happy family and they will be happy campers all day long!!
Alas ... here we are at the last bits of my Egg in a Hole ... the yolk still runny so you can soak it up in the bread. This is how you spell delicious.
A quick, easy and fun brunch/breakfast for the entire family. As I always say ... have fun with your food and enjoy your family around the table.
~Cheers!
