Sunday Dinner : A Crowd Favorite

When you think of Sunday dinner, what usually comes to mind?  My guess is it's probably something very comforting, warm and delicious.  If you follow my blog at all you know that I feel that meal times are special.  I think it's the perfect time for the family to come together, discuss their day, talk about things that are going on in their lives and are definitely, above all else: memory makers.

When my children grow up I want them to remember that no matter what we all sat down and had dinner together every night.  With my two year old, she now is a 'big girl' and she sits at the table with us.  She usually eats de-constructed versions of what we are having, plus always a side dish of fruit, as this is her dessert.  She knows when it's dinner time; she see's Momma in the kitchen preparing dinner and she will go to her booster seat and start messing with the buckle.  There have been times when I'm preparing dinner, Daddy is doing chores and we turn around and she is sitting in her booster ready for dinner.

Everyone has busy lives and with the children getting older and involved in more activities, making time for family dinners is a must.  At least in my house.

Today we are talking Sunday dinner.  So what better meal than Hamburger Steaks with potatoes and gravy.  Here's how it goes ....

Start out with about a pound and a half of ground meat.  You can use straight hamburger, ground chuck or combine with mild sausage.  Put in a large mixing bowl with Italian seasoning, bread crumbs, crushed red pepper, Worcestershire sauce, small dices of white onion, garlic, salt and pepper.  Combine and form into patties.
Place in a greased baking dish and bake in the oven at 375 degrees for about 15 - 20 minutes, or until cooked through.  While those are baking, let's talk gravy.  When doing hamburger steak, gravy is essential.  This is what makes the meal.  Start out by sauteing some white onions, garlic, mushrooms and salt and pepper.

Keep cooking until your onions turn translucent.  Add one package of brown gravy mix and heavy cream.  Stir with a whisk until well combined.  Turn your heat down to a low simmer; you want your gravy to thicken up slightly.

I don't think I need to go over mashed potatoes here ... you can do them in whatever style you prefer or have time for.  Depending on my time schedule, I may just use some instant potatoes and then bump them up with some fresh parsley, roasted garlic or even shredded cheese and sour cream.  If I have a good amount of time I'll make mashed potatoes from scratch and use buttermilk.  Then you can pick a great veggie as a side.

Once your steaks are done, remove from the oven and allow to sit for about 5 minutes before serving.  Serve on the plate and cover with your gravy.  A nice hot, comforting dinner for a relaxing day.

Cheers!
